Keeping Dreams Alive: Equipping 200 Children for School in Koroboto

Every child deserves to go to school feeling confident, prepared, and ready to learn. But for many hardworking families in our rural communities, bauying basic school supplies can be a heavy struggle. When money is tight, simple things like a proper school bag, a pair of sandals, or a fresh uniform can become luxuries parents cannot afford.

To help lift this weight off parents’ shoulders, the Gbenga Obilade’s Foundation recently visited St. Andrew’s Basic School in Koroboto, Ona-Ara Local Government Area, Ibadan. Here is how our Education Support Intervention is keeping children in class and helping them focus on what matters most: their future.

Why We Showed Up

Walk into any rural classroom, and you will meet children with huge dreams and bright
minds. But you will also see the silent toll that poverty takes on their education.
When a child has to carry their books in a torn plastic bag, wear a tattered uniform, or walk to school barefoot, it affects more than just their appearance, it touches their confidence. For many parents, choosing between feeding the family and buying a new uniform is a daily heartbreak. We stepped in at St. Andrew’s Basic School to make sure no child in Koroboto feels left behind or ashamed simply because they lack the basics.

What We Delivered

We met with the school leadership, identified the pressing needs, and brought complete
school packages directly to 200 pupils across Primary 1 to Primary 6.

Real Impact in the Classroom.
The difference was felt immediately across the entire school ground.
Mrs. Sade Olukuewu, the head teacher at St. Andrew’s, shared what this support meant for her students and their parents. Before our visit, many children were coming to school carrying their exercise books in thin nylon polythene bags. The books would get wet in the rain or easily torn. With proper school bags, these children can now protect their learning tools and keep their notes neat.
She also pointed out how relieved parents were to see their children in new uniforms. Many mothers and fathers had been distressed about worn-out clothing they simply
couldn’t afford to replace. Seeing 200 children neatly dressed, wearing sturdy sandals, and holding fresh books transformed the energy in the classrooms, bringing back joy, pride, and an eagerness to learn.

Testimony

“The change in our pupils is clear for everyone to see. These bags, uniforms, and sandals have removed a massive burden from parents who were truly struggling to afford them.”
– Mrs. Sade Olukuewu, Head Teacher

Looking Ahead

Our work at St. Andrew’s Basic School is part of a bigger promise at the Gbenga Obilade’s Foundation. Whether we are providing food to families or putting books in the hands of young learners, our mission remains the same: to stand by our communities and remove the obstacles standing between our people and a better life.
