Keeping Dreams Alive: Equipping 200 Children for School in Koroboto

When a family goes through hard times, getting a child ready for school is never just about paying tuition. It is about buying textbooks, finding money for proper school shoes, filling a backpack with exercise books, and making sure there is enough food at home so the child does not sit in class on an empty stomach. When money is tight, these basic expenses can pull a child out of the classroom completely.

To celebrate our Founder’s birthday on September 9th (09/09), the Gbenga Obilade’s Foundation turned a personal milestone into real support for our community. Under the theme “9 Basic Needs Met for 1 Family,” we focused on nine everyday essentials, simple items that should be accessible to every family, but often become heavy burdens during hard times.

Looking Beyond the Classroom

For many struggling parents, sending a child to school feels like an endless hill of expenses. If you pay the school fees, you might not have enough money left for core textbooks. If you buy the backpack, daily school meals and basic kitchen food might run short.

We created the 09.09 Initiative because we know that a child cannot learn well when things are extremely tough at home. True back-to-school support means taking care of the child’s learning tools, daily meals, and lifting the constant financial worry off the parents.

9 Basic Needs: What We Provided

Instead of giving temporary help that quickly disappears, we brought complete, end-to-end support to one household across education, daily meals, home supplies, and family income:

Real Impact & Financial Accountability

Bringing Back Comfort and Joy

By combining back-to-school essentials with daily food and business support, this effort did far more than buy school supplies. It brought peace of mind back to an entire home.

Clearing the school fee debt and providing all required books meant the child walked into class with confidence, fully prepared alongside their classmates. At the same time, providing school lunches, breakfast snacks, and home groceries saved the family from daily hunger and food worries.

Equally important, the business grant gave the parent the capital needed to trade and earn money independently. This ensures that when the next term comes, the family will be in a much stronger position to sustain their child’s needs independently.

Open and Honest Budgeting

Being careful and transparent with funds is central to how we operate at the Gbenga Obilade’s Foundation. Out of the approved ₦300,000 budget set aside for this birthday project, our team completed every single component of the intervention for ₦290,500. The remaining ₦9,500 balance was safely returned to the foundation’s account.

Turning Birthdays into Community Relief

The 09.09 Accessible Education Initiative reflects what we stand for at the Gbenga Obilade Foundation. We believe celebrations should leave a lasting, positive mark on people’s lives. By removing nine basic worries that never should have been a barrier in the first place, we helped one family stand strong again.

We will keep working alongside our communities to remove everyday obstacles, support parents, and ensure every child gets a fair chance to learn, grow, and succeed.
